CIVIL DEFENCE

CIVIL DEFENCE in Arthur's Pass rests on the individual and collective preparedness of the local community prior to a natural disaster. We are unlikely to receive comprehensive outside help within two weeks in a major disaster. This page will soon contain information on where to go and who to seek for help in an local emergency, plus a printable version of the lists below.

What you need, to be prepared...

FOOD AND WATER -ENOUGH FOR AT LEAST 14 DAYS. Check and renew the food and water every 12 months.

EMERGENCY ITEMS. Check the batteries every three months. SUPPLIES FOR BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN EMERGENCY CLOTHING. Put all items, especially blankets and clothing, into 10 litre plastic buckets with a sealed lid (these can double as water carriers). Develop a HOUSEHOLD EMERGENCY PLAN which includes:

GETTHRU civil defence plan work sheet (pdf)

YOUR GETAWAY KIT. Everyone should have a small bag for a Getaway Kit, ready for evacuation. Most of the items are part of your Emergency Survival Kit. Other items include: BUSINESSES. Businesses should also consider:

CHLORINE METHODS for water purification (from www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/emerg.html)

Chlorine Bleach: When boiling is not practical, chemical disinfection should be used. Common household bleach contains a chlorine compound that will disinfect water. The procedure to be followed is usually written on the label. When the necessary procedure is not given, find the percentage of available chlorine on the label and use the information in the following tabulation as a guide.

(If strength is unknown, add ten drops per quart of water. Double amount of chlorine for cloudy or colored water or water that is extremely cold.)

The treated water should be mixed thoroughly and allowed to stand, preferably covered, for 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor; if not, repeat the dosage and allow the water to stand for an additional 15 minutes. If the treated water has too strong a chlorine taste, it can be made more pleasing by allowing the water to stand exposed to the air for a few hours or by pouring it from one clean container to another several times.
